The Burden of Joint Replacement
Each year, governments and healthcare insurers spend over $30B on joint replacement procedures . Although joint replacement is an effective means of restoring mobility and alleviating pain, the reality is that patients can expect, on average, no more than 17 years before their implants fail irreparably. For patients in their 70s and 80s , 17 years may be sufficient to live out a healthy, pain-free life. For those in their 40s and 50s , however, it is insufficient, leaving these patients to live out the final years of their lives dealing with the pain and permanently reduced mobility of a failed joint replacement.

Extending Active Life
Formed in 2005 as the first spin-out venture from the Cambridge-MIT Institute, OrthoMimetics (OM) is bringing to market a line of tissue regeneration scaffolds that improve the efficacy of first-line surgical procedures for the repair of defects in articular cartilage (ChondroMimetic), ligaments (LigaMimetic), and tendons (TenoMimetic) "defects that are a major cause of the pathological degeneration that leads to joint replacement. These products help surgeons treat injuries more effectively when they first occur, preventing or delaying pathologic al degeneration and extending patients"â„¢ ability to lead a healthy, active, and pain-free life.

Building on a four-year product and preclinical development programme involving inputs from world-renowned surgeons, scientists, and engineers from the University of Cambridge, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, and Kyoto University, OM's highly experienced commercial team is poised to bring swiftly to market a world-leading line of products that give patients a greater chance of receiving their first joint replacement only when it can last the rest of their lives.

Moving Swiftly to Market
Drawing on a recent top-5 finish in the EEDA Running the Gauntlet Competition and features in Science Business and Nature Bioentrepreneur, OrthoMimetics is currently in discussions with prospective investors and corporate partners to secure Series A financing to bring its flagship product, ChondroMimetic, to market in 2008.
